In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Music Video

The illustration or performance videos which is the video type of my media product are when the vidoe tells the story of the lyrics and emotions and feelings are expressed through song and dance. These conventionally have a clearly expressed narrative and make use of internalised stereotypes, pop culture and hegemonic views of men, women and other social groups to present simple narratives such as the relationship between a man and a woman using representations that audiences will both understand and aspire to. In that sense my production follows the conventions closely as it has all of these features and representations because it allows us to easily get a following with a new artist.

Evaluation Question 1
by: cloudkickersharris

The music chosen for the basis of our music video was 'She's a bad mamma jama' a funky soul song about the beauty of a woman. It was the tempo of the music that was the reason we chose this song, although we chose a song written in the 80's we decided that we would create a video that followed the conventions of current R&B funky music videos that centre around a 'star' and a traditional boy meets girl senario. Conforming to the dominant media ideologies that beautiful women should be sought after and desired which relates to the male gaze theory that suggests mass media images such as those in music videos are filmed from and for the male perspective objectifying women.

The main artist in our research was the singer 'Diggy Simmons' who takes on similar roles in his music video, we noticed that establishing the male character is a key convention of these music videos. At the start of our music video we set an equilibrium focused soley on the protaginist using close up and extreme close ups, which are used start narrative and use direct address to create a relationship between the protaginist Alex and the audience. This is used in the industry to bridge the gap between star and audience and establish a fanbase; the demographic that we aimed our production at were young people between the ages of 15-30 and as such we followed the trends in current pop culture and media; the clothes Alex wore such as 'snapback cap's and the fact our video was set partially in a skatepark were elements we highlighted through close ups, cut away's and as the primary backdrop in order to conform to genre stereotypes and create a figure that audinces can relate to.

We followed the main narrative structure of conventional boy meets girl music videos, devloping the lyrics of the song to progress the narrative in that as the lyrics talk of the female 'amiee' the character gets increasingly infatuated using close ups and shot reverse shots with an eye line match in order to demonstrate the link and the growing relationship between the 'couple' which is an idea that can be seen across many similar products. After researching other similar productions the primary being Diggy Simmons 'do it like you' we noticed that these videos had a cinemati cyet romantic  visual, and so we decided that adding a light red coloured filter would give our product a vintage yet romantic atmosphere that cannot be gained with standard visuals and is used in similar products. Although we did challange the genre as unlike most boy meets girl videos we had a secondary theme that ran throughout the video that was rollerblading and skateboarding, so unlike other romantic videos who focused soley on the relationships we often cut away to skate scenes and the skatepark. We did this to empathise the youth culture and appeal to other audiences that are less interested in romantic stories.

Website

Looking at the website for popular artist Diggy Simmons who is the type of artist that I based the pop star persona around I was able to see the conventions of the website of a real pop star, I noted that the main design feature of the sites pages is the artists brand name. The font is a bold font variant and is made to be a striking feature through the use of black, red and white colours whihc both compliment eachother and allow for the text to stand of from the background easily. Almost immediately the viewers are bombarded with images of the star and he istantly becomes the centre of the page this sells the artist well and would gratify audiences who have come to the site especially as a fan of the artist. The website has a simple home page in terms of features but has a prominent page bar with tabs that allow users to select other pages on the website such as 'Home, News, Videos, Photos, Music, Store, About Diggy and Community' These different pages are common on artist websites because they provide interactive services that allow audiences to interact with the star by gaining access to his music, new about him, access to photo galleries and information about him which brings a new level of interaction that comes after the intial interest gained from the music and the music videos. After looking at professional examples we followed the conventions completly by using Bold serif font to grab the users attention and put the brand name in the forefront. The colour scheme matches the house style we have established across our three media texts using the funky purple as a symbol of our genre and music culture; by including a biography, picture gallery, contact information and links to social networking sites we followed the conventions and allowed users a level of interaction different from our main product.

The Digi Pack

When desiging the digi pack I found that by researching the conventions of other similar media texts I could come up with the best composition. I found that artists in the pop and R&B genres especially for new artists like Rizzle Kicks who like my own pop star persona are around the same age, in the same social sub group of urban indie and are new artists. The artist or in this case artists' are simply the focus of the album cover without any complex designs or colours, my design is very similar to theirs and the other then an image of the artist and text the design has a plain background. As a new and mostly unknown artist the effect this has is that it forces people who don't know who teh artist is to focus on him and him only whihc brings into consideration what he is wearing, his looks, social group he represents and what his music would be like. because of this conventionally and in the Rizzle Kicks album artwork the artists are wearing snapback caps and hoodies which are both symbols of pop culture and the urban indie social group we are targeting as a result. Because of this we decided to use similar clothes which are quite striking colours in order to emphasise this point; the text and brand name is both understated and obvious and like the Rizzle Kicks album art it uses a simple text that is till easy to see, although we used a serif font because we wanted an air of maturity within our image to create a greater audience and they used a freestyle font that is more free and youthful; inkeeping with their image.
